Most people eat as a part of their daily routine and they don’t bother much about the quality of food they eat. Filling their stomach is their primary concern.
There are others who eat whatever they can get when they are hungry. These people are always very busy and are forced to eat at fast food restaurants. Eating processed food is harmful for our health because it contains preservatives and coloring and flavoring materials. Some of these materials are carcinogen.
Though fast foods and processed foods are tasty to eat, they lack nutritional value. To be healthy and free from diseases, the food we must supply our body with the essential nutrients our body needs. Therefore, nutritious diet means a diet that gives our body the required amounts of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals.
Carbohydrates give us the energy we need to work and play. Wheat, rice and potato are rich sources of carbohydrate. Carbohydrates, in excess of our body’s needs, are stored in the body in the form of fat.
Proteins are the basic muscle building blocks. Sources of protein are meat, eggs, fish, nuts and pulses. People on intense workout programs, people who are recuperating from illness and growing children need a good supply of proteins.
Fats in general also give us energy to work. There are different kinds of fats, some of which are useful and others, harmful. Polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats from olive oil, soy, nuts and fish are beneficial for our body.
Vitamins and minerals strengthen our immune system and prevent diseases. Most fruits and vegetables contain plenty of vitamins and minerals. Though we eat our stomach full each time, we don’t get all the nutrients in the right proportion. People who eat processed foods, whether it is meat or bread, are at a greater risk of contracting cancer because of the presence of harmful chemicals in them.
Eating too much of sweet and fatty foods makes people overweight. Obesity may cause heart problems. Though some fats are useful, we have to be careful about saturated fats. Unlike unsaturated fats which are beneficial for our body, saturated fats are harmful and must be avoided.
Saturated fats are the main reason for heart problems. Most of the saturated fats we consume are stored in the body and consequently, people put on more weight. Choosing a nutritious diet is, therefore, choosing foods which are beneficial and avoiding foods which are harmful for the body.
Eating a nutritious diet not only keeps the body healthy and fit but also makes us mentally and emotionally strong. A healthy body is supposed to have a healthy brain. The food we eat strongly influences the way we behave and think. It can also swing our mood.
Recent studies on eating habits and behavior have revealed that people who eat nutritious food are gentle in nature and can concentrate more on their work than people who eat unhealthy food. They refrain from binge eating and don’t put on weight as junk food eaters do. They are emotionally stable and physically fit. If we want to be healthy and free from diseases, the only way out is to eat a nutritious and balanced diet.
