What to look for a fitness centre in Bangsar

For many people who realize the importance of regular physical activity, they are presented with many choices and options.

Firstly determine the budget you have allocated for this.

For many, doing a daily walk or a slow jog around their neighborhood is sufficient. This option is dependent on the weather outside but this carries the risk of the weather being too hot or rainy, and the enjoyment is subjected to external factors such as motor traffic, stray dogs, insects and personal safety.

If you prefer walking or jogging with a friend, it may help to increase your personal safety but it can’t stop aggressive stray dogs, car pollution or the weather being a factor.

Being in an environment such as a public park will also have its pro’s and con’s. If you need to drive to a public park then parking charges or car security might be a concern.

Other park users may not be as considerate as you or the park may be  very popular and congested with other visitors so that your jogging is constantly interrupted.

Personal security in a park may also pose a concern so getting to and leaving the park requires you to be extra vigilant.

There are several parks in Bangsar but most of them are small and do not offer any jogging or walking track of sufficient size.

Your other options then go to the large, commercial chain gyms or the smaller fitness centres. There are several large chain gyms within a 5km radius of Bangsar currently. Most are in Damansara Heights and MidValley shopping mall with Celebrity Fitness located in Bangsar Village and a CHI (Clark Hatch) Fitness in Bangsar Shopping Centre.

These gyms like Fitness First, Celebrity Fitness, CHI Fitness offer the usual machine-based workouts as well as group workout classes by Les Mills. This is replicated in other gyms and they basically offer the same thing. The main complaint I have heard from these gym-goers is that the service is impersonal, there is a pressure to purchase more personal training packages, the workout routine is the same and the culture is very competitive which can lead to stress and often the combination of the hard-sell results in the gym goer dropping out. The second most common reason is that the exercise routine quickly becomes boring and the gym goer would need to engage a personal trainer to know.

Another smaller, specialized gym can be found in Bangsar Village that offers the Power Plate as a fitness tool. I know these were developed for astronauts living in space stations for extended periods of time to combat the effects of zero gravity but back on planet earth, I seriously wonder how effective standing on a vibration plate can be more beneficial to one’s fitness and strength when compared with a regular strength & conditioning program as we have the luxury of free gravity. There are opposing research results and at this stage the novelty of power plate is diminishing.

There are smaller gyms that focus on general lifestyle fitness and there aren’t many due to real estate being rented at a premium in Bangsar. One of these smaller gyms can be found in 9 Jalan Riong and is called Crazy Monkey Defense Malaysia.

This gym provides unconventional exercises such as the FizFit Workouts and Kettlebell Workouts. The classes they provide are all instructor led and the gym does not use any exercise machines. In addition, they teach a martial arts and lifestyle program for the everyday person called Crazy Monkey Defense. This program is a modern martial art where the participant can learn about boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and self defense in a clean, hygenic and safe environment. The gym isn’t huge, it’s around 3,000 sq.ft. but uses the space effectively. Visit their website to find out more www.crazymonkey.my

There’s free parking and also features another personal fitness-only gym on the first floor called Fitology.

Fitology is a new fitness concept that is very personalized to the individual. It uses unconventional exercise machines, a different fitness routine to cater for people who don’t know how to exercise, or who have an injury or is not longer in their physical prime. Find out more about Fitology at www.fitology.my

How Much Exercise Do You Get Per Week?

People today often don’t have and won’t make the time to walk on foot from one place to another. You may be convinced that this is not the case in your own daily practice and that this statement doesn’t apply to your own life, but you are most probably wrong.

Walking from your living room to your kitchen or to your office when a colleague asks you to leave a document on the desk is not considered to be a sufficient amount of movement in your daily routine. Our bodies are designed for movement and motion and these things are required to keep it in a good shape.

When you think about the way that people used to live before, it is easy to blame the convenience and comfort of the modern way of living for the obesity and the degradation of the human body. On a regular day a farmer, who works on his property will walk 15 miles per day and his wife will walk at least 5 miles on the same day. This is nothing like the life style of the people who dwell in the big cities and do office work.

By making this comparison the value and the worth of the daily exercises becomes more clear and understandable. It is a known fact that you could lose all of your excess weight just by frequent and regular exercising, but it is more advisable that you change your diet as well.

The healthy diet and the lower calorie intake are also one of the essentials for losing body mass. Many researches have been done that show the influence of the healthy diet in losing weight.

People that combine a low calorie diet together with regular exercises lose the fat more quickly and are less prone to regaining the same weight again once they have managed to lose it.

Only three basic steps need to be made to insure that you will lose the excess weight, feel better and manage to maintain this condition for a longer period.

1. The importance of sleep is often underestimated. It is of great significance that you have the adequate amount of sleep every day and that your sleep is not light or superficial. This phase of the daily routine is required to revitalize the body and give it enough energy for the daily activities.

Research has shown that people who don’t sleep well enough or long enough usually tend to have a higher calorie intake.

2. Make time for at least five days every week to walk. It doesn’t matter whether it is around the block or just in front of the TV. It is important that you walk at least a half an hour every day. If you have to healthy fit it is a pity if you do not use them.

3. If you own a treadmill, you can use it if and when you want to avoid the outdoor weather conditions.

It is important to plan your daily workouts and include your family in your healthier way of living.
