I'm sure you have read about Master Funakoshi saying that "a block is a strike and a strike is a block" but how many of you know what he means by that? How do you use a strike as a block and a block as a strike? We can spend a little time to study and reverse engineer the many different applications a block can have but it will require some tweaking here and there. Great! The next problem is how to train them in a "kata-like" format? In this short video, some important concepts and techniques are presented. If you study the video carefully you will see elements of stance changes and practice (dachiwaza), the all-important hip engagement and movement (koshiwaza), directional drills (hanmi), distancing (maai), hand techniques (tewaza) and the associated movements of "traditional" blocking techniques into a fluid, two person drill. Included in this drill is the important concept of timing, which, for many instructors, a very difficult subject to teach so the student can learn it in a live format. Speed and power is gradually introduced as the student becomes more adept and confident in these skills. The central theme is that with resistance from a partner, the student rapidly increases their understanding and application of a technique. This also becomes the perfect platform to introduct competition sparring and self defense as students are so accustomed to live partner training. A must for karate teachers and students alike!
